Add rules to a form
Show or hide fields, skip pages, deny submissions or act on a submission based on what someone answers.
Rules make a form react to the answers people give. Open the form and go to the Rules tab. A rule has a name, a condition and one or more actions.
The five kinds of rule
- Field Rules: a field can appear, disappear or change depending on what the person has already answered.
- Choice-based Field Rules: the list of choices in a field changes with an earlier answer.
- Form Rules: run actions when a form is submitted.
- Page Rules: skip to relevant pages. These need a multi-page form, so add a Page Break in the builder first.
- Deny Submissions: refuse a submission based on the respondent's input.
Choose a kind at the top, and the number beside it shows how many rules it has.
Add a rule
- Choose the kind of rule.
- Choose Add Rule.
- Give the rule a name, set its condition, and set its actions. Use + Action to add more.
- Choose Save rule.
The rules table has Edit, Delete and arrows to move a rule up or down. Each rule has an On or Off switch.
What the actions can do
- Field rules can Show, Hide, Enable, Disable or Make mandatory chosen fields.
- Form rules can Send email, Show thank-you message, Disqualify respondent, Redirect to URL, Assign as task and Send mobile push.
Rules run in order, and a later rule wins over an earlier one for the same field. Hidden fields are not validated or saved. Deny rules are checked on the server before an entry is stored, and the number of rules you can add is capped.
